Water Line Sanitation

Clean, safe water is essential to the health of every individual at homes and in commercial buildings. Over time, major health concerns arises because of excessive microbial growth along the interior walls of water pipes which poses health risks to individuals. This microbial growth is commonly known as bio-film, which are layers of bacteria attaching itself to pipeline walls continuously accumulating until it forms a plaque-like coating.

For household potable water systems, regular sanitizing of the pipelines should be done on start-up to eliminate bacteria. Follow these steps on sanitizing water pipelines.

  • Prepare a chlorine solution by mixing ½ teaspoon of bleach per 7 gallons water. This will produce a solution of approximately 5 parts per million (ppm). The recommended concentration for a chlorine solution is 5 to 10 ppm.
  • For storage tanks, fill it directly with sanitizing solution. Flush each line just long enough to be filled with the solution.
  • Allow the solution to sit for at least 30 minutes. Then flush the lines with fresh water.
  • Install water softener to your water tank to remove excess amounts of minerals like calcium and magnesium which are found in hard water. Using hard water can be dangerous to one’s health and reduces the life span of household items like clothes and appliances. Soft water helps keep the water pipes clean and free from bacteria.
